Video Poker Strategy

There are many basic strategies for video poker that will help you get ahead in the game. While there a variety of video poker games, most of the same strategies can apply to all of them.

Just follow some of the simple tips below to see an improvement in your playing. Also, consult the video poker tips page for some more basic know-how of the game.

Hands to hold onto
First, there are certain card sequences that you shouldn't separate, such as a full house. Don't break up straight to draw a straight flush and, even if you can draw one to a straight flush, don't break a flush. Keep a five-card pat hand that is a winner unless you can draw one card to make it a royal.

Cards to get rid of
By discarding certain cards, you will greatly improve your hand. Don't hold onto a kicker with any kind of pair because your return is reduced by five per cent. Never hesitate to break a flush if it means you can draw to a royal. Last but not least, don't hold onto a ten for a four-card draw.

Smart draws
There are specific times when it is a good idea to draw. You should draw three cards if you have at least two or three honors of different suits in you hand. Unless you have a straight flush, it's wise to draw one card to a royal flush. If you can get away with only drawing three cards to a royal flush, don't draw a fourth card. If you have a jack or a better card, don't draw five. Draw if you have a three-card straight flush or a low pair.
